Ireland's service to the UN
Ireland regularly seeks election to various bodies in the UN system. Over the years Irish nationals have served the UN with distinction.
Irish people have served the UN with distinction. Former President of Ireland Mary Robinson served as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 1997 - 2002 and was appointed UN Special Envoy for the Great Lakes region of Africa from 2013 to 2014.
From 2014 to 2015, Mary Robinson served as UN Special Envoy for Climate Change. Patricia O’Brien served as Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs from 2008 – 2013. Many other Irish nationals have served in a variety of key roles over our 60 years of UN membership.
Ireland contributes significant knowledge to the United Nations based on our over 60 years of experience in UN Peacekeeping operations. Irish Major General Maureen O’Brien currently serves as Deputy Military Advisor in the Office of Military Affairs, Department of Peace Operations.
As part of its commitment to effective multilateral action, Ireland regularly seeks election to various bodies in the UN system:
- we are currently seeking a term on the Human Rights Council for the period 2027-2029;
- on four occasions Ireland served as an elected member of the Security Council: in 1962, in 1981-82, in 2001-02 and 2021-2022.
Ireland also nominates individuals for election to independent expert-level bodies in the UN system. Anastasia Crickley, for example, currently serves on the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD).
On an ongoing basis, we participate actively in the work of the six main Committees of the UN General Assembly, and occasionally seek election to individual posts. These committees are:
- First Committee dealing with disarmament and international security;
- Second Committee on economic growth and development;
- Third Committee on human rights, social and humanitarian issues;
- Fourth Committee on decolonisation and a variety of other political issues;
- Fifth Committee on the administration and budget of the UN; and
- Sixth Committee on international legal matters.
