Ireland’s Development Cooperation Programme in Tanzania
Ireland has a long and enduring partnership with Tanzania. It is grounded in a shared history of people-to-people links, political exchanges and development partnerships. Ireland began an official aid programme with Tanzania in 1979.
Ireland’s development cooperation programme in Tanzania invests in primary health, women’s empowerment, sustainable livelihoods, nutrition, social protection, refugee services, trade facilitation and good governance. It has a strong focus on climate action and the rights of women and girls. The Embassy works with a range of partners to deliver this work - government, the UN country team, Tanzanian and Irish organisations – and coordinates closely with other development partners.
The Embassy’s work is led by our Strategy for 2022-2026. The Strategy has an overall goal of advancing Ireland’s values and interests through support for peace, prosperity and equality, with a focus on women and girls in Tanzania. The strategy recognises that poor women and girls are marginalised within Tanzania's economy, and experience high levels of inequality in both the public and private spheres.
